Murgia Materana Park
The Historical Archaeological Natural Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera, commonly known as “Murgia Materana Park”, features one of the most spectacular rock formations in the world. This remarkable terrain stretches along the canyons formed by the Gravina di Matera and the Gravina di Picciano, both tributaries of the Bradano River.
Located on the opposite side of the canyon from the Sassi of Matera, the park covers approximately 8,000 hectares, of which about 1,000 were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, alongside the Sassi of Matera.
The Jonian Coast
The Ionian Coast of Basilicata includes the towns of Bernalda, Scanzano Jonico, Policoro, Rotondella, and Nova Siri, as well as the localities of Metaponto and Marina di Pisticci. Known for its fine sandy beaches near Metaponto and more rugged shores towards Nova Siri and Policoro, this area has been a popular vacation destination for many years. The beaches offer a wild, natural beauty with the presence of sea lilies, which bear white and fragrant flowers, and the spiny sea holly that helps stabilize the dunes. The numerous seaside resorts provide a range of services for tourists and vacationers, with some equipped for sailing and sport fishing enthusiasts.
In the area, you can explore the remains of ancient Metaponto, including the road network, the sanctuary, the agora with the “Ekklesiasterion-theatre”, the ceramic district, and the castrum. On the opposite side of the modern road leading to the archaeological park lies the area of the castrum, built between the agora and the eastern city walls. It was likely used to house the Roman military garrison during the conflicts of the 3rd century BC, prior to the final defeat by Hannibal’s Carthaginian army.
